Description
"Some Sort of Angel brings the fire of a personal vision to a contemporary acoustic sound". With clarity and warmth these words express how I feel about my work, and the love I have for the art of music making. I'd like to thank artist Karen Brooks for bringing her own creative vision to this music. It is her beautiful painting which graces the CD's cover. As a composer and guitarist my thoughts and feelings are best expressed through purely instrumental music. Although "Some Sort of Angel" is the CD's title, it is also the name of the group I work with in this context. The instrumentation is classical and flat-top steel string guitars, double bass (Clyde Stats), vibraphone and percussion (Mark vanGulden), mandolin and tenor banjo (Jamie Masefield), with soprano and alto saxaphones and flute (Gary Gordon). A compositional choice was the spare use of specifically percussive instruments such as trap drums. It is the complex interplay between the right hand guitar fingerings and the bass lines with strong punctuations from the vibes, plus the mandolin in its' percussive context which creates to support and carry the rhythm structures without the need for drums. I wanted the listener to experience a sense of security while sailing just above the ground brushing it only occasionally with their fingertips. The sounds of India, Eastern and Western Europe, Spain, Brazil, American and European Jazz, and particular folk forms, can be heard through the musical arrangements though not always explicitly. I think of and hear this CD as a chamber ensemble telling its' story through a series of tone poems which move smoothly one to another. The Paul Winter Consort, Oregon, Carla Bley, Ralph Towner, Jan Garbarek, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, and some of the many great classical guitar composers, are some artists who come to mind when I think of this project. And throughtout this recording, the influence and work of Manfred Eicher at his European label ECM is inescapably present. I'd also like to thank Chuck Eller of Charles Eller Studios where this was recorded for his considerable artistry and magic behind the recording and mixing board, and for his positive support just from hearing a tape of our first concert. I hope you enjoy listening to this music as much as I enjoyed making it. Namaste.
