Description
STARK's first full-length, 13-track CD, "The Curse", will be released Friday, May 14, 2004 with a party at Continental, 25 3rd Avenue at St. Marks Place at 9 pm with our good friends Banana Fish Zero.
Singer/songwriter/bass player, Lani Ford leads the band STARK with Dylan Grewen on guitar and Greg Schiff on drums and leaves you asking "Did she just say...?". This is NOT whimpy chick crap!
STARK is a powerful, original, alternative indie rock trio based in New York City. All 3 members have been working together for close to 2 years on many different projects, starting STARK in June 2003, with shows in NYC clubs like Continental, Meow Mix and The Pussycat Lounge.
Lani Ford writes honest, passionate lyrics and sings with a raw, soulful voice. The arrangements are sparse and dirty with focus on simplicity and purpose. STARK has been compared to The Pretenders, Concrete Blonde, Garbage, Marianne Faithfull, PJ Harvey, Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles???? (we have no piano), Nirvana, Hole, The Breeders, Janis Joplin, Joan Osbourne, Patti Smith, Nancy Sinatra, 10,000 Maniacs, Melissa Ethridge, Loretta Lynn, Shania Twain, Liz Phair (the early stuff), Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morrisette...except kinda country, blues, latin, and Native American--with a nice smile and a BAD attitude! Whatever, we just think it's cool rock and roll that tells it straight up and IN YOUR FACE!
From the March, 2004 issue of "New York Waste" magazine:
" The bands, my God, the bands! It was another spectacular line up of music, so much so that each act was a different kind of orgasm...STARK, fronted by the tremendous Lani Ford, was a wet and down deep, dirty-sweet sound experience."
-The Mighty Afrodite, regarding the God's Love We Deliver benefit at The Pussycat Lounge in NYC on February 14, 2004
Lani Ford--vocals, bass, main songwriter of STARK
Weekend DJ at WPLJ-FM. Traffic reporter on Fox 5-TV. Studying Film Acting with Julia Carey at The School For Film and Television in NYC. Studying bass guitar with Patrick Pfeiffer--Adam Clayton of U2's instructor and author of the book, "BASS PLAYING for Dummies".
Voice Instructor is Katy Pfaffl--CCM alum, awesome singer, songwriter, pianist, guitarist, and violinist. Represented by Lifestyles for Print. Starred in the horror film hit "Zombie Cult Massacre, now available on DVD at Best Buy and Circuit City", with good reviews from Joe Bob Briggs. Lani has played for The Bicycle Dogs, The Blind Pharoahs, The Heather Larkin Band, The Wood Nymphs, Killer Pang, and The Love Pirates. She's also a fill-in touring back-up singer for TEMPTRESS. Born in Ft. Worth, Texas, Lani played bass for years before teaching herself how to play guitar well enough to sing her songs at open mics, where she met Dylan and Greg.
