Description
"This young woman is a poet on fire," - Laurel Boland of Sensored Magazine.
First Northern California, then Boston, Nashville, and finally New York City, Singer/Songwriter Brooke Fox is a woman of the world. Confessional lyrics, soulful melodies, and Fox's steady acoustic guitar create captivating music, ranging from jazzy folk to feisty acoustic-rock. Richard Cuccaro of Acoustic Live hailed her "Crystal clear voice, poetic grace and a maturity that runs deep in talent". Since her arrival on the NYC scene in Fall of 2000, Brooke has received rave reviews at The Cutting Room, Bitter End and The Living Room, which earned her performance slots in the BMI Acoustic Roundup series, Tina Schafer's New York Songwriters Circle, and the ASCAP Pop Songwriters Workshop. She's shared the stage with Vienna Teng, John Cowan, Mike Errico, and Will Hoge, She has also showcased at the Nashville New Music Conference (2NMC), Millennium Music Conference, ROCKRGRL Music Conference, Dewey Beach Festival and on college campuses around the country.
On first glance, the strikingly pale Fox, glowing under the stage lights, is simply fair-skinned. Inquire and you'll discover her lilywhite features are the result of a rare genetic trait called albinism. Question her further and she'll explain that it also causes extreme nearsightedness, sensitivity to light and legal blindness. Brooke has entertained her peers in the blind community on many occasions. This past fall, she performed at the California State convention for the National Federation of the Blind, held in Sacramento. Other appearances include the 2002 National Organization of Albinism and Hypopigmentation (NOAH) conference, California's Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) 2000), and as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act: 10th Anniversary Celebrations in California and Tennessee. Her autobiographical article, "The art of Albinism" was recently published in the NOAH News and the National Federation of the Blind's Braille Monitor Newsletter.
Fox's obsession with song craft was founded early. At age five she began performing in talent shows and musicals around her Northern California hometown of Vacaville, with the help of her Grandmother, a known local musician. Brooke began creating her own music in front of the Fox family piano at the age of eight. She later pursued her Bachelor's Degree in Songwriting at Boston's Berklee College of Music. There, she won annual slots in the college's songwriting showcases and was awarded a Berklee Songwriting Achievement Award. She says of her original work: "If it doesn't move people in its purest form, I know I need to dig deeper." Two of Brooke's songs were recently awarded an "honorable mention" in the 2003 Billboard Song Contest.
It was on Berklee's yearly "Inside Nashville" trip that Brooke discovered the songwriting community there. She relocated shortly after graduation in '98. While in Nashville, Brooke and her four-piece band haunted writer's nights and clubs including Exit/In, 12th & Porter, 3rd & Lindsley, and The End. Highlights include performing as a Nashville finalist for the Lilith Fair Acoustic Talent Search 1999 and playing live on The Buzz/102.9 and MTSU's WMTS Radio. Her independently released CD, NightLight (1999) garnered glowing reviews from Nashville media institutions The Scene, The Tennessean, Sensored, and Nashville Music Guide who declared, "This is an album that should be in your collection". Produced by Brooke and Jim Lightman, the 11-song CD is now in it's second pressing.
