Description
In the summer of 2003, Brian Kingston threw his TV out of his second story apartment in San Francisco and smiled broadly as it shattered on the sidewalk below. Brian had long dreamed of writing and recording an album's worth of songs with which to launch a career in music and leave the corporate world behind. But working 14 hour days at his job in Silicon Valley, commuting home in the dead of night, Brian had taken to watching late night TV to decompress before hitting the pillow. By the spring of 2003, however, he'd had quite enough of Conan. With the sound of broken glass still reverberating down the block, Brian sat down to write...
...a few short months later, Brian Kingston said goodbye to his boss, walked out of his job and into a career as a songwriter and performer. Needless to say, fellow employees were a bit surprised to see him spontaneously jump up from his desk that afternoon and head for the door with a handful of scotch tape and poster paper from the supply closet. But shortly thereafter, Brian sold everything he owned too big to fit in his car, and headed back to his creative roots on the East Coast.
By the end of 2003, with an album's worth of songs inspired by a string of failed romantic encounters in his early to mid-20's, Brian set off to assemble a group of musicians and industry professionals to help him record his debut album, Songwriters Are Cowards. Introduced by a mutual friend to the outstanding rhythm section of Stewart Myers on Bass and Brian Jones on Drums (Agents of Good Roots, Jason Mraz), Brian was soon connected with veteran guitarist/producer/vocalist Doug Derryberry (Bruce Hornsby, John Mayer, Ben Folds Five) and producer Chris Keup. Rounding out the outstanding team was mix/master engineer Kevin McNoldy (Dave Matthews), owner of Crystalphonic Studios in Charlottesville, VA.
Having fully descended the corporate ladder, Brian Kingston recently released Songwriters Are Cowards on his own Blue Bleep Records label, and is backing it up with live shows throughout the fall and winter of 2004/2005. With a pop sensibility grown from his mother's attempts to play only Jim Croce and his older sister's attempts to play only Duran Duran during his formative years, Songwriters Are Cowards has an eclectic sound and lyrical thoughtfulness sure to have broad appeal.
