Description
New York City in 2005 is not exactly where one would expect to find a gritty concept album like Greatest Hurts. In fact, Clara Venus never intended such a dated notion - even in jest. But, here you have it. An accident. Call it the subconscious getting the upper hand. Greatest Hurts is a blood stained document of relationships gone bad...starting at the end and staying there. Sure, there's no alien guitar hero from Mars, no blind kid playing pinball - but the songs flow like a bloody nose through the downs, and the down and outs, of life and love.
Clara Venus is a trio of small town boys in the big city. Tommy and Bick were on the junior high All-Star basketball team together. Bick and Crider were the rockers in the back row of choir at college. More songwriters than rockstar-ish hipsters, Clara Venus are a symbiotic creative team. As one member once said "I figured out the glue that keeps us together... We're all subliminally suicidal, but have a lust for life!" Like the Rimbaud poem that inspired their name, Clara Venus songs aim to combine a sensuality and decay into something raw that still retains a measure of beauty.
Teamed with producers Michel Tudor (Moby, Duncan Sheik, John Cale) and Chris Feinstein (Iodine), Clara Venus recorded Greatest Hurts whenever and wherever they could... from tracking at TMF studios in Manhattan the night before it closed for business and the equipment was sold, to a small house outside of Woodstock, NY with no water because the pipes froze at 20 below, to recording on their own in their basement rehearsal space, affectionately called "The Cave". Clara Venus found great working partners in Tudor and Feinstien and the album feels the influence of Tudor's Detroit rock upbringing and Feinstein's Nashville rock experience. The songs themselves owe something to personal heroes such as Steve Earle, Joe Strummer, Paul Westerberg, Dylan, and Bowie, but manage to maintain an identity all their own.
Clara Venus is decadent and positive. It's cheerful about its melancholy and subversive about the anarchy of life. As "Liar" says: "I got my loving cup/ I wanna fuck it up."
