Description
Music has always been a central part of Sean Hully's life. Sean is a multi-instrumentalist who was born in 1967 and lives in Ontario, Canada. He is known primarily as a saxophone player who doubles on flute and clarinet but he has an alternate identity as a guitarist and a singer/songwriter.
In 1991, Sean received a Bachelor of Music Degree in classical music and then a Licentiate of Music that focused on classical saxophone playing. During this period, he performed in the university wind ensemble, symphonic band, renaissance band and jazz ensemble. He also studied composition and electroacoustic music. Outside of school, he played in a professional rhythm and blues band, a funk band, a big swing band and various musical theatre productions.
In 1998, he moved to Toronto and completed a three-year jazz programme studying music arranging and saxophone playing with jazz saxophonist Pat Labarbra. Immediately afterward, he accepted a one-year contract playing tenor saxophone on a cruise ship in the Caribbean.
When he returned to Canada, he began writing and rehearsing his band for his first album "Interaction". It was a collection of original songs that were recorded in an effort to find a musical identity for him after such a diverse musical life. "Interaction" was released independently in 2002 and it reflects Sean's roots in rock, folk and pop as well as his singer/songwriter alter ego. "Interaction" was played on campus radio across Canada and charted #8 on the Anglophone charts in Quebec City.
Today, Sean works as a freelance saxophonist in Toronto, Canada and is performing with three bands: Piano Man (Billy Joel tribute), Le Phunk (funk band), and Triosphere (jazz trio).
