Description
"Tender melodies and a spare, graceful sense of funk" from 28-year old Berkeley native, Rachel Garlin, who spent last year teaching, touring, and recording her second CD, Five Minutes, a fully produced folk/rock album of original songs and arrangements.
Since the release of her first album, Green Light Distance, two years of public school teaching and concert touring have gone into Garlin's Five Minutes (on her own label, Tactile Records). From its story-filled songs to its eco-packaging, Five Minutes is an extension of Garlin's own life, of her interactions with her students as a teacher in the Berkeley public schools she once attended ("Julie"), of her cross-country touring in the latest bio-diesel auto that runs on environmentally healthy "Alternative Fuel," and of celebrating her Scottish heritage in the traditional folk song "Johnnie Cope."
Fine-tuned on the coffeehouse and college campus stages of America, Garlin's songs and live performance serve as a medium to express the life stories she sees and hears around her. Critics and fans alike emphasize her ability to engage her audiences with a stage presence that combines easy-going whimsy and thought-provoking content.
