A BIO (updated 5/05)
Jann Klose's current EP BLACK BOX, now in its second pressing, has been called "by far the best unsigned record I have heard in a long time" by Kid Kelly of Sirius Satellite Radio. The CD has certainly been a key ingredient - along with an active desire to perform for people all over the globe - in building Jann's career.
He is a motivated musician and artist, successfully booking shows and performing throughout the Midwestern and North-East U.S. and in his native Germany. In addition, over the past year and a half, promoting a record and developing a growing fan-base is earning him support from indie radio, both online and through the airwaves, as well as friendships and colleagues in a changing music industry.
Sounding like "a young Sting and a less histrionic Jeff Buckley" (Cleveland Scene Magazine), audiences and critics find comparison and originality in Jann's sound and songwriting pen. Klose's voice, has been described as "pliant and powerful", and "a bit unlike any other" by Musicdish.com and as "soulful and exciting" by the Boston Phoenix.
A versatile artist, Jann's recent endeavors include MOONLIGHT INTERIOR, a movement theatre production and collaboration with dancer, choreographer and director Yo-el Cassell. This evening length piece just finished a sold out run at the Sande Shurin Theatre in New York City and featured Jann's full band as well as 5 dancers. The Boston Phoenix writes "Mr. Cassell and Mr. Klose have created a world that is accessible but at the same time artistic, dramatic, humorous, moving, transporting and best of all, self revealing." The team of MOONLIGHT INTERIOR is planning a run in Boston this fall and another run in NYC as well as a CD/DVD package accompanying the show.
Growing up in Kenya, South Africa and Hamburg, Germany, Jann's first visit to the U.S. came as an exchange student to Cleveland, Ohio. Since his move to New York in 2000, Jann's theatrical gigs as a singer/actor include touring with Broadway's JEKYLL & HYDE, the European Tour of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and performing in THE WHO'S TOMMY at NJPAC. Violinist and Jam-band leader Joe Deninzon had Klose sing on his albums and the two have partnered for tour dates. Jann and his band have opened for Steve Forbert, Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, and he has shared the stage with guitar legend Les Paul.
Jann and Grammy Award winning producer of BLACK BOX, Marlon J. Graves, are planning a follow-up full-length album for the near future. In the meantime he and his band (Upright bassist Chris Marolf, drummer Patrick Carmichael, and keyboardist Roberta Piket) will be juggling out-of-town trips and local shows with studio sessions and are raising money for the new CD.
