About The CD
James F. Curley writes and performs a unique range of original songs rooted firmly in American musical tradition. It's a measure of James' broad reach that when people are asked what other songwriters or performers James reminds them of, one is likely to hear answers as divergent as "Steve Goodman", "Randy Newman", "Bruce Cockburn" or "Lyle Lovett."
James draws on the great songwriting traditions in what is now called 'Americana' music, but is truly original and not derivative of any one style or artist. Call it "Country Blues", "Folk", "Singer-Songwriter", "Modern Country", "Acoustic Roots" - these are all labels that have been applied to James' songs and performances. And, in a way, that's accurate. The listener can hear all that and more in this music.
Purposely avoiding the ultra-compressed sonic style of modern pop music, these songs feature spare but rich arrangements of acoustic and electric guitars, piano and keyboards, percussion, harmonica, accordion, acoustic and electric bass, Dobro and pedal steel guitar. James' vocals are supported frequently with lush harmonies by Nancy Walker and Sue Demel, two of the most original and powerful singers in contemporary folk music. The CD's overall character is the work of Larry Clyman, an award winning guitarist, arranger and producer.
