Description
You walk in to a bar somewhere in the middle of this painted desert and there's a really hot'unknown' singer/songwriter ripping it up in the corner. His voice and songs are so good you think to yourself, 'Why haven't I heard of this guy before?' Been there? Well, John Harley Weston is one of those musicians. Who knows why it happens. Fate has a strange way of weaving it's magic. All you need to know is that you found this remarkable talent before the rest of the world cottoned on.
In saying that some parts of the world already know the name John Harley Weston. As lead singer with Scottish group Frontier signed to Polygram UK he worked with some of cream of the music industry including legendary Steeley Dan producer, Gary Katz, as well as members of Paul McCartney's band. Some Australians will know the name since Harley Weston also wrote a song for the Brisbane Lions AFL team in 1999 called 'The Road To Victory' released via Festival/Mushroom Records. (Not your average football song I might add).
Harley Weston now lives on Australia's Gold Coast on Tamborine Mountain (dubbed Music Mountain as it boasts many great musician and songwriters as residents). His relative anonymity (he says he likes the solitude) can only be because the best is yet to come.......and his first solo independent album is the start of it........
'Hope Harbour' is a collection of well-crafted songs from a skilled songwriter who undoubtedly has a lot to offer. It's a music lover's album and a testament to a road well travelled. The songs featured are in a pop/rock genre with a full band sound. Much more than a straight-ahead rock singer this man has a lot of soul and weaves elements of rock, pop, blues and country together in to a classic package. This is a world-class vocalist and songwriter able to quench any musical thirst.
Rave Magazine Australia says of his first independent album 'Hope Harbour' released 2004', '......well crafted rock songs with strong soulful vocals....bluesy rhythms...and a voice that strongly recalls Paul Rodgers on Free's All Right Now.
Tsunami Magazine says, ' ....an economical album for the masses.....late afternoon urban blues.......socially aware vocal narrative.....'
In a recent live gig review the Gold Coast Music Industry Association said '...superb songwriting skills.....mixing rock and pop and adding a pinch of country and blues his sound is quite original.....music is his life....John Harley Weston could quite easily have come from a mould of Van Morrison.'
The 13 songs featured on the album are not overly hard-hitting and heavily metaphoric. They simply appeal to us to remember what's important in life; life itself. Observant lyrics dealing with, amongst other things, unity, the struggle for peace, literally and mentally, the importance of family and the need for the us to reflect on the past but focus mainly on the here and now in order to build a better future. It's all delivered in a classic rock format with melancholy undertones. You get the feeling this writer is displaying the tip of his iceberg. Think of the real pros like Springsteen, Paul Kelly, David Gray, Jimmy Webb, Don Henley, Lyle Lovett, Paul Rogers, John Mellencamp...........John Harley Weston is another name to add to that list.
He's played hundreds of live shows in venues ranging from outdoor festivals, pubs and clubs to the UK's university circuit and large capacity exhibition centres including Wembley Arena. (Headlining and supporting acts such as Wet Wet Wet, Duran Duran, Indigo Girls, Lighthouse Family, Gun etc).
Get a copy of the album, stick it in your player, sit back, stand up, run around, body surf on a car, do what every makes you feel good, cause this album is going to take you right over the edge in to nirvana.
