Jennifer Vazquez - Music Connection Showcase -The Gig (Melrose) - 2/15/05
By: Cyhndi Mora
Jennifer Vazquez has a warmth about her and poise that not only attracts some of the best local indie musicians as fans, but makes everyone at her shows feel at home and spoken to. Her presence on stage is as accessible and friendly as her performance is professional and polished. She really gets it across that she's happy to see you, inviting you in for her heart-to-heart lyric blend of poetry and emotional wisdom delivered via her powerful dynamic vocal range, really belting without ever seeming to stretch or strain too far or loose it's punch. She seems to move effortlessly from an almost Cline-esque growl to Appalachian - flavored twists that remind me a little of Natalie Merchant or the Cranberries all while stylishly alternating her guitar picking and strumming, and creating a wall of sound that filled the club every bit as much as a full band and still balanced her vocals and guitar so you could hear every word and nuance.
Lyrically Jennifer has a story to tell and she makes no bones about breaking it all down for us. She's taken a hit or two to the chest but retained her own brand of hearty optimism and wisdom about her life and times, serving up poignant reminders that there's always a hidden lining to what ever cloud you happen to be standing under at the time without coming off preachy or clich.
Many of the songs she played tonight were from her new album,"Bend", her hot off the presses full-band and full length release of exquisitely and tastefully produced snapshots from the heart told with an emotional wisdom and grace she seems far too young to possess, truly a diamond in the L.A. sand.
Tell me more...
Jennifer is constantly playing her music, whether it be on the streets of Hollywood at Highland or Hollywood's Farmer's Market or down on The 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, or it be her playing @ Borders Books, coffee houses and in the clubs around town.
Jennifer produced her first full length album,"Another Day In The Dark", in July of 2000. She has since released two acoustic cd's, "Just Me And My Taylor" and "Silenced". And of course, the new album that's just come out,"Bend", is her proudest accomplishment thus far.
A little bit more...
Jennifer was born and raised in The Bronx. While attending Stony Brook University, Jennifer became the lead vocalist for the Long Island band "Blush". After traveling in 1995 to Sonoma, California for the first time, Jennifer picked up the guitar, taught herself some chords and decided to leave the band to start her own project as a singer songwriter.
Jennifer played most of the NY clubs, The Bitter End and The Baggot Inn being her two favorites. She recieved label interest in NY, but decided she needed to get more experience elsewhere. She decided to give LA a try...
Now, a few years later and 3000 miles away from her home town, NYC, Jennifer walks a smart and steady pace to get herself known, as well as gain the respect and friendship of others in the music community all around.
She has come out with music videos for, "Running Out Of Time" & "I'm No Saint", which can be viewed on her website. Jennifer will be shooting another video in 2005.
Jen's also been named one of the top 100 unsigned artists of 2003 and 2004 by Music Connection Magazine. She recieved honorable mention for two songs she entered in Billboard's 2004 Annual World Song Contest (Bend and He's Like Strawberry Milk). She also recieved two honorable mentions for the songs she entered (I'm No Saint & Nothing Without You) in Billboard's 2003 Song Contest.
In addition, Jennifer has received the ASCAPLU$ award which recognizes her as an active and promising young songwriter for the past 4 years. She's been seen in the UK'S music magazine called "What Guitar?" in the 2003 September issue and has been written up and seen a half dozen times in LA's Music Connection Magazine in the past year so far.
