Description
"...a compelling voice and a keen sense of songwriting" -ExoDuster.com, September 2004
"Soulful renditions...reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan, but Melissa displays her own edgy style in her vocals. 'Fragile' stands out in the track list with a breathy tenderness that touches the soul." -Musical Discoveries, August 2004
***
Combine the warm, sweet vibe of Dar Williams and the frank urgency of Liz Phair. Throw in the raw grittiness of Chrissie Hynde and some piano driven soul in the likes of Fiona Apple. That will give you an idea of Melissa Rapp's sound.
Sweet Revenge, her debut album, was co-produced with Eric Miller (Vienna Teng) and displays a range of raw emotions--from the funky "Don't Ask Me to be Yours" to the haunting magic of "Waimanalo Night." Audience favorite "Come Dream with Me" showcases Melissa's voice--a unique combination of fragility and soulful edge. With "Fighter," Melissa rocks out with her trademark rebelliousness and determination.
Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, Melissa's music in part reflects her childhood--one full of hiking to waterfalls, swimming in warm ocean at night, and sleeping under the stars. Soothing melodies and lush tropical imagery are woven into her romantic ballads. But don't be surprised to hear her depart from her lullabies to belt out songs about strength, triumph, or the virtues of revenge. While she's got her mellow side, Melissa's music can be as feisty and wild as it is serene. She easily moves between softer songs reminiscent Sarah McLachlan to rock songs with a fiery intensity similar to the Dave Matthews Band.
Melissa has been playing consistently sold-out shows in San Francisco at venues such as the Red Devil Lounge, Last Day Saloon, Hotel Utah, and Tongue and Groove. She's also built an LA following with regular appearances at Molly Malone's and Genghis Cohen. Recently, she stood out among San Francisco's top bands in the radio Live105's Battle of the Bands contest and also took top honors in the West Coast Songwriter's Association live competition for her song "No Resisting You."
More reviews:
"...strong, lively songs...a solid record. 'Waimanalo Night' is a sweet, reflective song. 'Fighter' is funky and tough--Rapp seems to be at home with that style too. 'The One You Remembered' has a great groove...piano ballad 'Fragile' is another standout track." -Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music, 2004
"Which is best? A woman who sings beautifully, a woman who writes beautiful songs, or a woman who looks beautiful? Melissa is the rare combination of all three. If you love the way Paul McCartney sings during the outro of "Hey Jude" then you should check out one of Melissa's shows. The band is tight and she wins over a room like few artists I have ever seen." -Chris Cary, January 2004
