Description
THIS IS NOT HAWAIIAN MUSIC!!
San Francisco piano man Eric Shifrin busts out the originals in this richly melodic set of instrumentals. Many styles are vistited, from the beautiful to the burning with strong soloists throughout. Several of these cuts were among the most played on the DMX Jazz channel.
Red hot Las Vegas trumpeter Chief Sanchez and bay area saxophone star Pete Cornell are featured, as well as historic recordings with Shifrin on alto sax.
For you WIERD JAZZ people check out X-Ray Vison, Red Shift and Gekko Groove!
HARDBALL is the free blowing bluesy opener in the style of The Jazz Messengers / Bobby Timmons. Check out Dennis Norby's old school drum fills.
YERBA BUENA is a bossa-esque melody originally written on soprano saxophone.
FONDLY REMEMBERED is a jazz waltz with a tasty Peruvian flavor from Raul Ramirez on traps. Chief Sanchez contributes the horn arrangement and a nice solo.
NO-NAME RAG is a tribute to Mal Sharpe's "BIG MONEY IN JAZZ BAND" and their gig at Sausalito's No-Name Bar every Sunday. Shifrin spent about a year in the piano chair.
POINDEXTRA is a moody straight ahead jazz number featuring just the piano with bass and drums.
UNCLE LALO is a tribute to Shifrin's (not really) uncle Lalo Schifrin and the many inquires he receives regarding their relationship.
TIME ALONE is another waltz featuring Pete Cornell on tenor sax.
KAUAI was written on Kauai as were several other of these numbers. Shifrin's professional career began and has returned several times to Hawaii.
GEKKO GROOVE is almost a rock tune. You may hear some more versions of this tune in the future because like the Gekko it can change shape at will.
ALOHA (the title track) closes out the first set. These recordings were done in Berkeley CA. at the historic Fantasy Studios, the engineer was Dave Wellhausen.
The rest of the tunes feature ERIC SHIFRIN on Alto Sax and are from his early days as a nomadic jazz man. Pianist Joe Indence is featured as well as the DELTA TRIO from Santa Fe, New Mexico, with Chief Sanchez on trumpet.
