Description
Lanterns of Midnight is a weaving together of Mystical Poetry married together with the musical sounds and rhythms of the Earth and the Elements. There is a sweet fusion here between words and music, where neither one truly takes the front seat to the other : a journey of the individual flowing into and being held up by the Landscape of the Soul,
" The mind goes, in this madness of Love, for a torch to burn further in every direction, and pulls me around, through days I don't decide upon...
(from There's a Hole in My Earth)".
Throughout this soundscape, there are many moments of dwelling in the place of Longing, the Deep Wanting which we all experience in some way, for a Union with that which can guide us in our Living, and bring Beauty and Mystery into the many steps we take along our path towards and within what keeps us searching for and finding a sense of Awe and Wonder.
As Rumi , the 13th Century Mystic Persian Poet says,
"There is some kiss we want , with our whole lives...".
The music of this project is a seeking for that kiss, and took form synergistically through a turning over and over of the poems and instrumentation while I was waiting to feel as though I was complete and ready to go record. I was going out into places like the beach at night to play Didjeridu and receive guidance and inspiration, as well as taking sometimes entire days and evenings to walk through beautiful places such the Marin Headlands or Point Reyes, Drumming, playing Flute and chanting the Poems, feeling the Wind blow through, asking for something greater to enter my whole being and to bless the music of this CD.
It really became apparent to me that I was ready when my Father died in 2003 at age 61. How precious time is! I was poignantly shown by his passing that I truly could be doing that which gives me the most Joy.
The CD holds forth these moments of Clarity and Grace and is truly a sort of Universal Portal through which to pass and explore the territory of what Frank MacEowen, Celtic Shaman, Poet and Musician refers to as Oran Mor, the Great Song.
I have been playing Didjeridu for the last eight years in Trance-Fusion-Chant-Band, Axis Mundi and have performed regularly in the Bay Area, recently also joining up with Kirtan Ensemble and Mantra Dance Band, Jagadambe. Having moved to the Bay in 1993 from Colorado, I feel so grateful to have opened to and been opened up by the Spirit of Longing and encountered deeply transformative experiences following the Muse and taking part in many amazing and loving encounters with other Wild Creators seeking a connection with the Divine through the magical vehicles of Music and Dance, and gathering with one another to celebrate and grow what turns us all on. I truly invite you to hear for yourself, and wish you the Best!
All Blessings, Travis, "Travieso" Wernet.
