Description

Djangos Castle, one of the great guitarists most haunting
pieces, goes by the alternative title of Manoir De Mes Reves
(Manor Of My Dreams) and this Catalan quartet is certainly
the dream team among bands in the Hot Club of France
tradition.
DJANGOS CASTLE is entirely devoted to jazz manouche,
gypsy jazz, but played from a special perspective: the
sound is a constant tribute to Django Reinhardt and his
music and the band preserves the natural emotion and
atmosphere of this style of jazz.
Formed in 1984 after the accomplished and versatile Pere
Soto discovered the gypsy sounds of Django, the band is
much admired throughout Europe and was one of the great
successes of the HMV Birmingham International Jazz
Festival 2002.
The bands repertoire includes many well-known songs
(Nuages, Sweet Georgia Brown, etc.) but also such
obscurities as Vals De Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, a
Reinhardt original never
recorded by him.
Since the groups first
appearance in the UK in
2001, DJANGOS CASTLE have gone from strength to strength in Spain,
with highly successful concerts, appearances at the International Jazz
Festival Terrassa and Jazz Festival Menorca and radio and television
appearances on Catalan and Spanish national channels. They line up with
guitar star Pere Soto, rhythm guitarists Joan Ramon Punti and Josep
Traver, and bassist Joan Marti.
Meanwhile DJANGOS CASTLE have a new CD on release, with many new
compositions by Pere Soto: not surprisingly, he has been accepted as a
member of the Contemporary Association of Catalan Composers, the
association of the highest-rated music composers in the country. But, new
compositions or not, Pere Sotos proudest claim is that Djangos Castle is
closer than ever to the famous Hot Club of France of Django Reinhardt and
Stephane Grappelli.

Era el ao 1983 , hacia tiempo que Pere Soto, guitarrista en aquellos momentos dedicado
a la exploracin del jazz y sus afines, haba descubierto al guitarrista Django Reinhardt.
Pero todava no se haban creado las circunstancias para iniciar la aventura de un grupo
de estas caractersticas.
Su unin primeramente con Oscar Roig (msico en la actualidad muy reconocido como compositor)
y ms tarde con el violinista Roberto Lecaros, fue el detonante final para crear un grupo estilo
manouche, gypsy jazz.
Nacera Djangos Castle, grupo dedicado exclusivamente a homenajear al guitarrista Django
Reinhardt dentro siempre de un estilo personal y una visin muy personal de su lder, Pere Soto
gracias a sus propias composiciones y arreglos.
A lo largo de estos aos han ido sucediendo diferentes formaciones. La primera fue en 1984 con
Roberto Lecaros - violn, Pere Soto - guitarra, Oscar Roig - guitarra, Tino Regueira - guitarra,
Manolo Diaz - contrabajo. Actualmente el grupo est formado por Pere Soto guitarra solista,
scatt, Josep Traver, guitarra rtmica y Joan Marti, contrabajo, voice y scatt.
Sus actuaciones ms destacadas hasta el momento han sido:
Desde entonces y hasta la actualidad, Djangos Castle ha mantenido una lnea de constante
homenaje a uno de los mejores msicos que nos dio el siglo XX, sin duda alguna, al mejor msico
de jazz europeo, el nico que deslumbr a todo el mundo contemporneo de su poca, influyendo
tanto a americanos, como al resto del mundo, hablamos de Django Reinhardt.

Born in Badalona (Catalonia, Spain) the 20 of november of 1958.
Guitar player, composer, arranger, music producer.
Self - taught musician. He has demonstrated a tremendous interest in all musical genres,
starting in the world of Rock and Blues and moving to Jazz. He has excelled in several groups
and as a solo artist, and he has made several recordings and performed in concerts and
festivals in the United States, Mexico and Europe.
Some of the most importants events are:
In 1992 his first Compact-disc, Metanoic, published in Holland with the Pere Soto
and Bill Gerhardt Quartet, was selected by Jazz South Federation (USA), best CD of the
month and broadcoasted all over the United States.
In 1994 his second CD of Pere Soto and Bill Gerhardt Quartet Particular Vernacular,
recorded in Brooklyn (N. York), played with;
Bill Gerhardt, Dave Douglas, Dave Liebman, Ben Allison and Jeff Ballard.
In 1999 appears with Big John Patton Band in the North Sea Jazz Festival, (Holland)
In 2000 his String Quartet n 2 is performed by EL cuarteto de la ciudad de Mxico, in
Mexico City.
In 2004 he has played in Spain, Holland, England, Mxico, and completed a three month long
tour USA-MEXICO (WaterTown, New York, Ashville, Charlotte, North Carolina, Greenville,
South Carolina, Austin, Texas, Prtland, Oregon, San Miguel de Allende and Queretano
(Mxico).

In 1983 he discovered the music of J- S. Bach whose
spiritual force and enormous musical power struck him.
From the onwards, he inmersed himself in the world of
the classical composers. Special mention should be made
of three great maestros from last century, namely Charles
Ives, Olivier Messiaen, Bela Bartok.
His passion for the music and the composition is his life.
He has write for guitar, ensembles, string quartets, an
unfinish opera, piano, etc...

In 1985 produced and write the arrangements for orchestra for the
album Adoracion (gospel record) in Florida, USA.
Later in 1989, his own work Coincidencias was nominated on Radio Nacional 4
(Spain) as Best Record of the year, and was broadcast on short wave by Hilversum radio
station (Holland) around the world.
In 1989 produce his album Coincidencias with the best local players of Catalunya and
become the most broadcast jazz album of the jazz catalan history,.more than 1000
times in 2 years by Catalunya Radio.
Also was nominated on Radio Nacional 4 (Spain) for the Best Record of the year, and
was broadcast on short wave by Hilversum radio station (Holland) around the world.

The big hit of last year's festival, but still comparatively little known in this country, the
Catalan quintet, Django's Castle, has returned for four days of joyful and intensive
music making. Even performing for the afternoon shoppers in the Pallasades, Pere
Soto's group's distinctive brand of gypsy jazz demanded attention with its compelling
rhythms and quirkily unexpected melodies. Soto's virtuoso guitar playing lies at the
heart of the group, so steeped in the Django traditon that he even adopts the great
man's fingering (i.e. two fingers short) for the classic Nuages. Pere brings the
dynamism to Django's Castle. An expert in flamenco music, he is anything but a
Reinhardt clone, duetting whimsically with bassist Joan Marti or engaging in hell-forleather
pursuits with his other two guitarists. As well as the repertoire of the Hot Club
of France, notably the hauntingly beautiful melody from which they derive their
name,Django's Castle feature Pere Soto originals in the Django tradition and roar
through standards like Sweet Georgia Brown, powered by the rhythm guitars of Joan
Ramon Punti and Josep Traver.

Ce groupe ibrique en est sa deuxime (auto) production. Le guitariste Pere Soto,
leader de la formation, y exprime encore son admiration pour le gnial manouche.
Mais Pere, s'il connat parfaitement la musique de Django, est aussi influenc par
d'autres musiques (guitaristes ?) et cela s'entend principalement dans son phras :
l'ombre de Larry Corryell (le fameux disque "Young Django"
avec Stphane Grappelli et Philippe Catherine) ou mme de Robert Johnson (quelques
bends sauvages). Sur le disque prcdent notre homme jouait sur une ovation folk et
nous le regrettions un peu (le son un peu ...) mais cette fois-ci, Pere manoeuvre sur un
modle rglementaire bouche en D, ce qui ne l'empche pas de faire sa faon. Les
reprises sont arranges maison (Minor swing, Djangology, Douce ambiance, Body and
soul) et donnent ce qu'on peut attendre d'un bon quartet trois guitares (un seul
soliste) et une contrebasse. Ne nous tendons pas sur l'intrprtation vocale de "There
will never be another you", moins qu'il faille l'couter au second degr, ni sur la mise
en place assez maladroite de "Place de Brouckre". En revanche, la version de "Body
and soul" est une surprise : aprs une intro-solo de guitare un peu modernocomplexe,
vient subitement s'imposer une rythmique et un son digne du QHCF, avec
un joli chorus et les craquements du gramophone, chouette clin d'oeil. Il faut retenir
galement les jolies compositions du leader, le swinguant "Menor-K" avec la voix de
Pere l'unisson, la dlicieuse "Hele Guify" ou la fire "rumba 2001", la version de
"Jitterburg waltz" peuutilise en swing cordes. L'album conclut sur une impro solo
trs nostalgique intitule "Citlaly". Pere Soto nous laisse esprer unesuite heureuse
l'aventure "Django's Castle", un des rares groupes de ce style en Espagne.
