Description
Sam Lardner & Barcelona is everything that a cross-cultural musical experience should be: artists from different traditions meeting in a place where everyone shines brighter, the kind of eclectic collaboration the world needs now more than ever. Sam, at 43, is a seasoned veteran of the American folk and acoustic tradition. He has performed throughout the U.S. as a solo act, and he has led a smoking hot country band around Europe for the past 7 years. A full-time resident of Barcelona, he is often categorized by fans and critics as a member of the "Why aren't you famous?" club. His voice and writing are reminiscent of James Taylor in the most intimate moments, although he is often compared to John Denver when he allows his voice to soar. Sam's guitar playing is pure rhythm and power, providing the energy and pulse around which his band revolves.
Barcelona is, artist by artist, a brilliant group. Guitarist, Pedro Javier Hermosilla, is a Spanish top 40 artist in his own right. Javier Martin is considered the best flamenco bass player of his generation, famous for his virtuosity and solo ability. Juan Flores is the popular favorite of every crowd with his deep intensity on percussion. Sandra Ortega and Yasmina Azlor add richness, depth and authenticity with their syncopated clapping rhythms and powerful vocal harmonies. Spanish fans wonder at Sam's ability to slide in and out of traditional flamenco structures in the same way that American audiences are wowed by Barcelona's ability to jump back and forth between Latin rhythms and pure funk.
Sam's newly-released CD, titled "Barcelona" is a reflection of 4 years of hard work, experimentation and, most of all, joy, a musical celebration of life and love in the Mediterranean. The ballads are poignantly crafted works of storytelling and emotion. The rumbas, alegras and tangos are solid sunshine and light. It is a rare melodic journey through love in all its colors that anyone who is serious about the topic will want to listen to many, many times over.
