The dead class, named after Tadeusz Kantors drama of the disaffected, take up the challenge of punk rocks latest chapter. Citing bands such as Nomeansno and Fugazi along with notables Iggy and the Stooges and the Ramones amongst their influences, the dead class are part of the itinerant ethnic punk revival that sees bands such as Flogging Molly or Gogol Bordello using their cultural diversity to produce exciting new energetic sounds.
The dead class are not an overtly political band, yet songs such as That All You Got, Trash Junkies and My Machine contain a savage irony that poses dark questions about modern living. The dead class are most definitely outsiders.
Matthew Cawe known as Villy, is the charismatic focus, playing guitar and singing.
Born in County Mayo in the west of Ireland, this wastrel from the land of the Poor Mouth has a unique pogue ma hoin quality to his voice that suggests it should be taken with a pint of Murphys.
Whether screaming out punk classic I Was Wrong or touching hearts with Once Upon A Quality Time, Villys is a voice to be heard.
Jake Wedgewood aka Kuba is a bass player with a maturity beyond his years. Playing piano and guitar from the age of eight, listening to the blues of Jimmy Yancey and Pete Johnson has given Kuba a solid, rhythmic foundation to his playing, forming the musical engine of the dead class with drummer Sefton Booth aka The Ten Foot Toads.
The TFT has had a nomadic life, drifting from grimy Midlands towns to various European capitals, he has never settled long enough to call any place home, he comes from a long line of drummers who inhabit the world with that different agenda, his performances make manic into an art form that needs to be seen to be believed.
The dead class have gained notoriety as a live band, best enjoyed in the context of a sweaty club or pub. Their exciting live shows have quickly become memorable events. Playing music together every single day, whether rehearsing, touring, writing songs or recording is at the centre of what the dead class are about. Three very different musicians with very different backgrounds coming together with a single minded purpose to make fast, fun, energetic yet thought provoking, intelligent music.
