Description
"The band is now evolving, along with Denver's nationally charting The Fray, as one of the West's premier purveyors of expressive and engaging piano-pop." - The Oregonian
Five-part harmonies, catchy piano hooks, soaring violin solos, and dance-inducing pop/rock melodies are drawing more and more fans to The Retrofits, a Portland, OR quintet that is taking full advantage of pop and indie's new creative license (The Oregonian).
Grounded in jazz piano, acoustic guitar, soulful harmonies, and vivid lyrics, The Retrofits create a unique rock sound that is both symphonic and super-sexy according to Thomas Lauderdale of the world-renowned band Pink Martini.
The group was created by Jake Oken-Berg (vocals, piano) and George McCleary (vocals, guitar) in 2003. Jake and George grew up together running track, playing music, and making mischief at Lincoln High School in downtown Portland. Previously independent songwriters, the two reconnected after college and began collaborating on songs they had written over the years.
The Retrofits opened for national acts Everclear and Pink Martini within their first year of playing and will be releasing their debut album "Away From Here" on January 13, 2007. The band will be touring nationally after its release.
Experienced performers Darin Wirth (bass guitar), Brud Giles (drums), and Jason Barlow (violin, guitar) round out a band that is known for its high-energy live performances and civic-activism.
"Simply, a band worth catching," says Lee Williams of The Oregonian.
